Ganciclovir Implants May Benefit Patients with Cytomegalovirus Retinitis

Sustained-release ganciclovir implants may offer a suitable alternative to intravenous administration of the drug for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, recent findings suggest.

H.O.C. Guembel and colleagues reported their surgical experience after sustained-release ganciclovir treatment ("Complications after Implantation of Intraocular Devices in Patients with Cytomegalovirus Retinitis," Graefes Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, October 1999;237(10):824-829).

They also addressed replacing empty ganciclovir implants in patients with AIDS and CMV retinitis.
