Pain, Other Untreated Symptoms Are Prevalent in AIDS Patients

by Maryclaire Lindgren -- The pain and other distressing symptoms of AIDS that seriously affect patients' quality of life frequently go undertreated.

Improved quality of life is a recognized therapeutic goal for chronic illness patients. AIDS is recognized as a chronic illness, and the symptoms AIDS patients suffer can impair their quality of life. Dan Vogl, of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and associates investigated the types of symptoms these patients endure, as well as their prevalence ("Symptom Prevalence, Characteristics, and Distress in AIDS Outpatients," Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, October 1999;18(4):253-262).
