The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of clinical algorithms in the form of flow charts to diagnose and treat people with symptoms of STIs in less-developed countries where a laboratory diagnosis is not available. In the November 11, 1999, issue of The Lancet, researchers report that this "syndromic" management results in a high rate of overtreatment in areas of low STI prevalence.
