Ob-Gyns Recommend Expanded Testing for Diabetes, HIV, HCV

African-American, Hispanic, and Native American women are at higher risk than other ethnic groups for diabetes and their routine medical screening should include a fasting glucose test every three years, says the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Moreover, all women seeking preconception care should be offered a test for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the group says.

These are among the new recommendations in the ACOG committee opinion, "Primary and Preventive Care: Periodic Assessments," released in December 1999. The document updates previous ACOG recommendations on the screening, evaluation, and counseling...
