Residual Viral Replication Complicates Long-Term Prognosis

by Michelle Marble -- Antigen-induced stimulation of the immune system generates heterogeneity in CD4⁺ T-cell division rates which helps explain patterns seen in viral load fluctuations during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), researchers from Europe report.

The advent of HAART in the past few years has provided researchers with a wealth of information on the interaction between HIV and the human immune system. Data on posttherapy patterns of viral load decline, as well as changes in CD4⁺ T-cell population structure broaden the knowledge base of heterogeneity in within-host viral replication and immune system reconstitution.
