Abundant Intracellular Zidovudine Triphosphate Found in Cord Blood

Recent findings may shed some light on the success of zidovudine in reducing vertical transmission of HIV-1, according to researchers in the United States.

J. H. Rodman and colleagues determined systemic and intracellular pharmacokinetics of zidovudine for 28 HIV-1 infected pregnant women and their newborn infants ("Systemic pharmacokinetics and cellular pharmacology of zidovudine in human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected women and newborn infants," Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1999;180(6):1844-1850).
