Ciprofloxacin Is An Effective Single-Dose Treatment

Although ciprofloxacin is effective as a single-dose treatment for chancroid, high treatment failure may occur because of herpes simplex virus infection, according to a recent report.

I. M. Malonza and colleagues conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in Nairobi, Kenya, to compare single-dose ciprofloxacin with a 7-day course of erythromycin for the treatment of chancroid ("A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of single-dose ciprofloxacin versus erythromycin for the treatment of chancroid in Nairobi, Kenya," Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1999;180(6):1886-1893).
