Syphilis Appears to be a Cofactor for Women with HIV

According to a study reported recently in AIDS, the sexually transmitted disease syphilis tends to reflect a risk for HIV in certain geographical areas of the United States.

Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the prevalence of primary and secondary syphilis and HIV in childbearing women who lived in 29 states (448 health districts).

The investigators, led by E.H. Koumans, analyzed study data from 1990 census and geographical records to ascertain the relationship between these two diseases. The geographical data represented more than 75% of the U.S. population, they reported. Their analysis...
