Antivirals Prolong Life for Women with HIV and Cervical Cancer

A group of researchers in Texas and Louisiana says that the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is associated with longer life and less severe cervical lesions in women who are positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The group, led by William R. Robinson, presented its findings at the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists 31st Annual Meeting, held in San Diego, California.

Investigators studied the medical records of 149 women with a diagnosis of cervical cancer between 1992 and 1999. Special emphasis was placed on HIV status, diagnosis, treatment, and survival, Robinson et al. said.
