More Singaporeans Taking Anonymous HIV Tests

Those undergoing anonymous AIDS tests in Singapore have soared amid growing openness about the disease in the conservative Asian country, a citizens' group said May 16, 2000.

A total of 1,395 people took anonymous tests last year, up from an average of about 400 a year since the testing began eight years ago, said Action for AIDS administrator Benedict Jacob-Thambiah.

AIDS awareness is growing along with a gradual liberalization of Singapore society, Action for AIDS volunteer Feisal Abdul Rahman said. "I think this society is slowly opening up," he said. "We're more willing to talk about these issues."
