Experts: AIDS Epidemic Won't Halt Until Stigmas are Removed

The stigma and silence surrounding AIDS must be broken if the epidemic is to be controlled in South Africa, now home to more HIV infected people than any other nation, experts said June 27, 2000.

According to a new United Nations report on HIV/AIDS, about 4.2 million South Africans - roughly 10% of the population - are HIV positive. South Africa's infection rate is even higher among pregnant women: 22% of those who visited prenatal clinics last year tested positive for HIV.
