Quick HIV Tests for Use in the Field are Emerging

Calypte Biomedical Corp., Alameda, California, is seeking international funding to help get its urine test for HIV into rural areas in African countries, where the virus and full-blown AIDS are epidemic.

Hot on its heels are other rapid diagnostic tests in development, sampling saliva or a single drop of blood, for example.

According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle ("Biotech firm wants to supply Africa with easy-to-use AIDS tests," August 11, 2000), Calypte has one partnership with a company in South Africa that will bring the quick, easy urine test to villages via mobile clinics.
