NIH Grant Awarded to Study HIV Pathogenesis, Latency, and Prevention

The Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research, Baltimore, Maryland, will receive more than $7.3 million in U.S. government money over five years to study the disease that has killed more than 16 million people worldwide.

The Center received the first installment, nearly $1.5 million, from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases on September 25, 2000. About a third of the first installment will fund studies into disease development, latent HIV infection, immune restoration, and prevention.

The rest of the $1.5 million will be used to improve research facilities and communication systems used by researchers.
