Blood and Semen Correlate, But Blood and Saliva Do Not

Researchers in France found that compartmentalization of HIV viral loads correlate between blood and semen, but not between blood and saliva.

"The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the repartition of HIV-1 between blood, semen, and saliva and to appreciate the effect of antiretroviral treatment on the viral shedding in these three compartments," stated C. Cazorla and colleagues from the University of Saint Etienne. "Forty-four combined samples of blood, semen, and saliva were obtained from 39 HIV-1 infected men followed at the Hospital of Saint Etienne."
