Nearly 25,000 People Found HIV Positive in Vietnam

Vietnam has 24,473 people who have tested positive for HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, an official reported on November 1, 2000.

The actual figure of HIV carriers, however, is in the range of 135,000 to 160,000, said Dr. Quang Hai of the National AIDS Committee. Hai said 3,931 people have developed full-blown AIDS and 2,038 have died from the disease since the first HIV case was detected in 1990.

The southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City still tops the list of 61 provinces with 4,100 cases reported, followed by the northern province of Quang Ninh with 2,900 and the northern port city of Haiphong with 2,100. Hanoi is the fourth with 1,500, he said....
