Decision Analysis Suggests Checking CD4 Count, Viral Load Every Six Months

According to researchers in the United States, the optimal frequency for testing HIV infected patients for CD4 cell counts and HIV RNA levels is every six months when CD4 cells counts are >300 cells/(mu)l and then every three months when CD4 cell counts drop below that level.

"Guidelines for HIV clinical care recommend measuring CD4 cell count and HIV RNA levels at intervals ranging from every two to six months," stated A.D. Kimmel and colleagues from several universities and hospitals. "Our objective was to determine the most efficient testing intervals."
