Isoniazid Prophylaxis Decreases Risk of Recurrent TB in HIV-1 Patients

A study conducted in Port au Prince, Haiti, indicates that tuberculosis recurs more frequently in patients infected with HIV-1 than those who are not.

Researchers also determined that prophylactic isoniazid treatment of HIV-1 patients who have had TB reduces the chance that they will experience recurrence of the disease.

The study comprised 233 adult patients who had successfully completed six months of rifampicin treatment for active pulmonary tuberculosis. Of these, 142 were positive for HIV-1 and were randomized to receive either post-treatment isoniazid prophylaxis (n=68) for one year or placebo (n=74). The remaining 91 patients were not...
