Tick-Vectored Disease Can Be Deadly in HIV Patients

Infection by rickettsiae in the genus Ehrlichia - apparently via tick bite - causes ehrlichiosis. According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers and their colleagues from a number of other institutions, common manifestations of ehrlichiosis infection in HIV patients include: gastrointestinal problems, rash, leukopenia (reduced white blood cell count), thrombocytopenia (reduced number of platelets in circulating blood), increased levels of hepatic transaminase, and hyponatremia (reduced sodium ion...
