Cumulative Toxicity from Antiretrovirals May Cause Symptomatic Hyperlactatemia

Researchers in France suggest symptomatic hyperlactatemia (lactic acidosis) has the potential to become a serious complication for HIV patients on long-term antiretroviral therapy.

Fortunately, if caught early, the condition can be treated.

Fourteen HIV positive adults on antiretroviral treatment were diagnosed with symptomatic hyperlactatemia after presenting with such symptoms as abnormal fatigue, tachycardia, abdominal pain, weight loss, and peripheral neuropathy. Researchers noted exercise-induced dyspnea, as well, despite effective antiretroviral treatment, they said.
