EU Grants $6 Million to Fight HIV/AIDS in Caribbean

The European Union has approved a 6.9 million euros (US$6 million) grant to the 15-nation Caribbean Community to help it fight HIV and AIDS in the region, which has an infection rate second only to Africa's.

Selwyn King, spokesman at the Guyana-based Caricom Secretariat, said on December 19, 2000, that the money will go toward public awareness campaigns and improvements in health institutions.

The grant aid agreement comes from a larger Euro 20 million package approved for the 71-nation African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of former European colonies, King said.
