Protein Plays Dual Role in Apoptosis Responses

by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- The HIV-1 vpr protein can either be used to induce or resist apoptosis in different kinds of cells, depending on conditions and requirements for virus survival, immunologists in Italy report.

S. Gessani and colleagues working at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita in Rome "investigated the effect of vpr, physiologically expressed during the course of an acute HIV-1 infection, on the response of infected cells to apoptotic stimuli, as well as on the HIV induced apoptosis."
