HIV Mutants Show Resistance to Antiretroviral Treatment

by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- Virologists in The Netherlands warn that new HIV mutants refractory to treatment with nucleoside analogs may threaten the future effectiveness of such remedies.

"Sequence analysis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) from 74 persons with acute infections identified eight strains with mutations in the reverse transcriptase (RT) gene...associated with resistance to the nucleoside analogue zidovudine (AZT)," A. Deronde and colleagues at the University of Amsterdam wrote in the Journal of Virology.
