Blood Transfusions Do Not Pose Viral Activation Risk

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Contrary to conventional wisdom, blood transfusions do not seem to have a negative effect on HIV patients, according to researchers at the University of Washington.

"Allogeneic blood transfusions have immunomodulatory effects and have been associated with activation of [HIV] and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in vitro and of HIV in small pilot studies," A.C. Collier and colleagues explained in the Journal of the American Medical Association. "Retrospective studies suggest that transfusions adversely affect the clinical course of HIV."
