STD Care Lacking In South African Private Health Sector

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the private South African health sector is of poor quality and often unavailable, hampering efforts to curb HIV transmission, researchers say.

H. Schneider and colleagues at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg evaluated private South African STD care for their report in the South African Medical Journal.

Treatments offered for several common STDs were usually ineffective when they were offered at all, the researchers found.
