Inflammatory Substances Play Important Role

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Mediators of inflammation are heavily involved in the development and progression of HIV related encephalitis, researchers in New York report.

"Inflammatory cytokines and enzymes such as IL [interleukin]-1 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AIDS dementia, a condition associated with infection of the CNS cells by HIV-1," according to M.L. Zhao and colleagues at Yeshiva University.
