Strategy Is Becoming More Common For Preventing HIV Transmission

A survey has found that syringe exchange programs are an increasingly common HIV prevention approach that offer a range of public health services in addition to syringe exchange.

According to Mytri Pritam Singh, MPD, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, the survey showed 110 syringe exchange programs (SEPs) reported operating in 1998 in 81 cities in 31 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The largest numbers of SEPs were in California (21), New York (14), Washington (12), and New Mexico (9).
