T-Cell Receptor Excision Circles Help Evaluate Pediatric Response

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Measuring levels of T-cell receptor gene rearrangement excision circles (TRECs) in pediatric HIV patients can be helpful in determining their response to immune-restoring treatment, researchers in New York say.

"Immune reconstitution after antiretroviral therapy in [HIV] infected patients may result from the recovery of thymus function, peripheral redistribution, or decreased T-cell destruction," explained S. Chavan and colleagues at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Research Institute in New York.
