CDC Says New Approach Could Cut Rate Of New Infections In Half

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a new approach to HIV prevention that will involve intensive prevention outreach and services to those living with the disease.

The strategy was discussed at the 8th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections held earlier this year, and was reiterated in a June 14, 2001, press release. The plan is called Serostatus Approach to Fighting the HIV Epidemic (SAFE). Rob Janssen, MD, director of NCHSTP's Division of HIV Prevention - Surveillance and Epidemiology, outlined the scientific basis for the approach and its estimated impact at the conference.
