Costs Of Global HIV Prevention And Care Program Estimated

On June 25-27, 2001, government and civil delegates met for a Special Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations to consider an expanded global response to HIV/AIDS.

Writing in a Policy Forum article in the June 22, 2001, issue of Science, Bernhard Schwartlander and colleagues estimate the costs of prevention and care under such a plan by 2005, and calculate that the effort will require about $9 billion annually. The authors say half of these resources will be needed in sub-Saharan Africa.
