Efavirenz Provides Greater Long-Term Viral Suppression

DuPont Pharmaceuticals presented data showing that combination therapy with its anti-HIV drug SustivaTM (efavirenz), a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), continues to provide greater and more durable viral suppression through three years of follow-up than combination therapy using a protease inhibitor.

Data, presented at the 1st International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment, showed a greater response in reduction of viral load with a regimen containing Sustiva to less than 50 copies/mL (52%; 78/154) compared with a protease inhibitor-containing regimen (30%; 43/148).
