Tuberculosis-Related Chemokine Disturbance May Hasten Progression

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Elevated levels of inflammatory chemokines may underlie tuberculosis-related acceleration of HIV progression, researchers say.

Zahra Toossi and colleagues at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda, and the Insitute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, examined the expression of (beta)-chemokines in patients infected with HIV, tuberculosis, or both.

Levels of these chemokines were heightened in coinfected patients who also demonstrated an increase in the expression of (beta)-chemokine receptors, they found.
