Brazil Withdraws Threat To Ignore Drug Patents

Brazil withdrew its threat to ignore patents and start making a generic version of a powerful AIDS drug after a Swiss pharmaceutical giant promised to slash prices by 40%.

Health Minister Jose Serra, who had pledged to start making the drug Nelfinavir at Brazil's state-owned Far-Manguinhos laboratory, announced a last-minute agreement had been reached with the drug's manufacturer, Roche group of Switzerland.

The Swiss pharmaceutical giant had agreed to reduce the price of Nelfinavir in Brazil by 40%, to US$0.64 per unit, Serra said, adding, "With the deal, it's cheaper to buy from Roche than to produce the drug.''
