Advances in the study of viral genomes has laid the foundation for rapid progress in the development of new antiviral vaccines and drugs. "The 1950s were the golden age of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections," William A. Haseltine, PhD, said. "We are now in the early years of the golden age of antiviral drugs. The 1990s witnessed the discovery of a wide array of new antiviral drugs for the treatment of diseases such as hepatitis B, herpes and AIDS.
