Success Of HIV Therapy May Discourage Safe Sex

A recent survey reveals that some gay and bisexual men believe AIDS therapy reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to sexual partners and that this belief is associated with greater likelihood of unprotected sex. Gay and bisexual men were more likely to have unprotected sex with casual partners if they believed that HIV/AIDS treatments - generally referred to as highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART for short - reduced the likelihood of the transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the study published in the November 2001 issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine shows.
