Few Immune Cells, High HIV Counts May Not Mean Poor Treatment Response

Among patients beginning therapy to fight the virus that causes AIDS, a higher HIV level at the start of treatment and lower initial counts of CD4 cells are not associated with poorer response to therapy, according to an article in the November 28, 2001, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Andrew N. Phillips, PhD, of the Royal Free Center for HIV Medicine, Royal Free and University College Medical School, London, and colleagues analyzed data from three European studies to characterize the relationship of viral load response to antiretroviral therapy (ART) with baseline CD4 cell count and baseline viral load.
