An estimated 2.7 million - or more than 4% - of Ethiopia's 62.7 million people are believed to be infected with the virus, one of the highest rates in the world. At a news conference December 3, 2001, leaders of the three parties said the HIV virus that causes AIDS is spreading at an alarming rate, particularly among the 15-24 year old age group.
