FAO conference hears that AIDS compounds hunger problems in Africa

AIDS can no longer be considered a health problem alone; it affects people's incomes and their access to food, according to a speaker at a recent Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference held in Cairo.

"Because of AIDS, decades of development have been lost in Africa," said the manager of the FAO's AIDS and food security program, Marcela Vilarreal.

Interviewed before she presented a paper on the impact of AIDS/HIV on access to food, Vilarreal said the disease seriously affects the capacity of those infected with HIV to produce and purchase food for themselves and their families.
