Vietnam plans to produce cheap AIDS drugs

Vietnam plans to produce cheap copies of internationally patented drugs for treatment of its growing number of AIDS patients, a government official has announced.

The official of the Anti-AIDS Permanent Office said the decision is part of a plan developed by his agency to treat AIDS patients. The plan also includes development of traditional herbal medicines that can strengthen the health of AIDS sufferers, he said.

The plan is expected to be submitted to the prime minister for approval in May, he said.

Vietnam still must settle the issue of copyrights held by the drug companies, the official said.
