Nearly 1 million in Russia infected with HIV

Nearly a million Russians are likely infected with HIV, the Health Ministry's official in charge of AIDS prevention reports, and the climbing infection rate could aggravate the country's demographic crisis.

Vadim Pokrovsky was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying that 100,000 new cases of HIV were registered last year, more than double the figure from the year before, bringing the total officially reported HIV cases since 1987 to 182,000.

But taking into account the huge numbers of unregistered HIV cases, which Russian and international health officials estimate are several times the official figures, the country is nearing the 1 million...
