Immune cell counts have little effect on hepatitis C diversity

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Immune cell levels have only a limited effect on the genetic features of hepatitis C virus (HCV) populations in HIV patients, according to researchers in France.

Anne Marie Roque-Afonso and colleagues at Paul Brousse Hospital in Villejuif and Bicetre Hospital in Le Kremlin-Bicetre studied the effect of CD4+ T-cell counts on HCV diversity and complexity in coinfected patients.

Reduced CD4 cell counts in these patients were not a significant factor in HCV genetic heterogeneity, they found.
