High free fatty acid levels linked to insulin resistance

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Heightened free fatty acid (FFA) levels may underlie insulin resistance in patients with HIV lipodystrophy syndrome, researchers in the United States report.

"Fatty acids are known to modulate insulin resistance in other disease states, but a comprehensive evaluation of fatty acids has not been undertaken among HIV infected patients with fat redistribution," according to Dr. Gary Meininger and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital in Boston.
