Nef protein's CD4 suppression aids viral proliferation

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - The pathological effects of the HIV protein Nef stem from its ability to inhibit CD4 expression by T lymphocytes, researchers in the United States say.

"Nef enhances human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infectivity in culture and stimulates viral replication in primary T cells," explained Christopher A. Lundquist and colleagues at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lundquist and coauthors found a strong link between Nef-induced CD4 downregulation and enhanced viral proliferation.
