Cyclosporin A may be effective adjunct to antiretroviral therapy

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in Europe say that cyclosporin A (CsA) can improve the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV infection.

"Primary HIV-1 infection causes extensive immune activation, during which CD4⁺ T cell activation supports massive HIV-1 production," explained Dr. G. Paolo Rizzardi and colleagues at the University of Lausanne and the Clinique de La Source hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy.
