Sam68 expression can restore some Rev function in infected astrocytes

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in the United States have identified a cellular protein that appears to facilitate viral RNA export by the HIV Rev protein.

"Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) gene expression in astrocytes is restricted, resulting in a brief and limited synthesis of HIV-1 viral structural proteins," explained Dr. Jinliang Li and colleagues at the Indiana Univesity School of Medicine and the Walther Cancer Institute in Indianapolis, and Harvard Medical School in Boston. "Impaired Rev function has been documented in these cells."
