U.N. says AIDS rapidly reaching epidemic proportions in Asia-Pacific region

HIV/AIDS is rapidly reaching epidemic proportions in parts of Asia and the Pacific, the United Nations has warned Monday, adding that the newest threats are in India and China.

At the present rate of new infections, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Asia-Pacific could reach "monumental proportions," the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, or ESCAP, said in a statement.

The findings, revealed in a new U.N. study, was presented to government ministers at the May 20002 ESCAP conference in Bangkok.
