Large-scale testing of new AIDS vaccine postponed

Large-scale testing of two combined AIDS vaccines scheduled to begin August has been postponed until the end of the year.

The tests, involving thousands of volunteers, were delayed as more time was needed to prepare for the unusually large project, said Dr. Supachai Rerks-Ngarm, a Thailand Health Ministry official and project director.

The 5-year trial will use a combination of two vaccines, one from the French pharmaceutical company Aventis Pasteur and one from VaxGen of the United States. The combination will be given to 16,000 uninfected volunteers ages 20-30 in two eastern Thai provinces, Rayong and Chonburi.
