Community building reduces young gay men's HIV risk behavior

Young gay men - ages 18 to 28 - in Albuquerque reported a 12% decrease in risky sexual behavior as a result of a community-building HIV prevention intervention. Similar cohorts in Austin and Phoenix who did not receive the intervention reported increases of 42% and 26% respectively, when compared with risky behavior rates prior to the introduction of HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) in 1996, say researchers at the University of California - San Francisco (UCSF) Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS).
