Sustiva provides immunosuppressed HIV/AIDS patients effective treatment alternative

Data presented at the XIV International AIDS Conference show that a greater proportion of patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) containing Sustiva (efavirenz), Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) once-daily non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), achieved a viral load less than 400 copies/mL and CD4 cell counts above 200 cells/mm3 compared with a protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimen in highly immunosuppressed patients naive to therapy.

The results from this study support the use of Sustiva in protease inhibitor sparing regimens for patients with low CD4 counts, high viral loads, and opportunistic infections.
