International AIDS experts say HIV skyrocketing in Ukraine

HIV infection rates are skyrocketing in the former Soviet republic of Ukraine and experts estimate that 1% of the nation's 48 million people are currently infected, the organizers of international AIDS conference say.

Officials have registered 49,873 cases of HIV in Ukraine. But the actual number of victims is likely to be in the hundreds of thousands and could rise to 1.44 million by 2010 if no effective measures are taken, the conference organizers said in a statement.
