Interferon-alpha may hasten progression

Eva Stylianou and colleagues at Rikshospitalet University Hospital in Oslo investigated IFN-alpha's impact on expression of genes which could modulate the course of HIV infection.
Although IFN-alpha had some therapeutic cellular effects, the cytokine also promoted the expression of apoptosis-inducing proteins and HIV coreceptors, Stylianou and coauthors found.
